Ken Shindo

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of the renowned designer and manufacturer Ken Shindo on January 22nd, 2014, following a brief illness. Ken was 74 years old.

Established in Tokyo in 1977, Shindo Laboratory has received a great many accolades -- especially in recent years, as their products have attracted new followings in Europe and the US. Throughout that time, Ken Shindo's craft and creations have been celebrated by a growing number of admirers. To them and to us he was a true artisan: a builder of gear that exists not as an end in itself, but as a means of finding the beauty and excitement in recorded music. In that, Ken Shindo enjoyed greater success than any other designer of our acquaintance. It is Ken Shindo who has been our guiding light, and who will remain so for as long as we engage in the art of music playback.

Ken Shindo's sudden passing, which came at a time of great productivity, leaves us shocked and saddened. Shindo Laboratory will carry on -- under the long-standing guidance of Shindo-san's wife, Harumi, his sons and his loyal assistants -- yet at this time we ask customers and admirers of the brand for their patience and understanding while we mourn his passing, during which time enquiries may not receive prompt replies.
